Seattle Radio: Fire Knocks Four AMs Off-Air

A radio transmitter building owned by Salem Communications in the Seattle market was destroyed in a fire Monday morning.

According to bainbridgereview.com, the fire was discovered by Bainbridge Police Officer on patrol in the area and smelled smoke.

The fire appeared to start in a radio transmitter building located at the base of a radio tower on the property, but spread from the 12-foot-by-12-foot structure to nearby grass and then started a brush fire.  Bainbridge Island Fire Marshal Luke Carpenter said the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

The transmitter building fire silenced four AM stations in Seattle; KNTS 1680, KKOL 1300, KLFE 1590 and KGNW 820.

  1. The company does own 4 stations in the Seattle area. However, only two of them transmit from the Bainbridge site: KLFE and KNTS. KKOL transmits from Fife and KGNW shares towers with KJR on Vashon Island.
