Quad Cities Radio: WOC Retools Morning Show

It was more than just a name change when "Morning Report" on WOC 1420 AM morphed into "AM Quad-Cities" last week, according to qctimes.com.

"We're just retooling things just to bring it back to its roots: a local-based radio station," said Q-C radio veteran Dan Kennedy, who co-hosts the 5:30-9 a.m. shift with Dan Deibert.

For more than 2½ years, WOC aired its morning report in conjunction with Cedar Rapids radio station WMT 600 AM, both owned by iHeart Media.

The hosts — first Steve Ketelaar and Mark Manuel, with Deibert later replacing Manuel — would record most of their interviews for the respective stations to play back.

Ketelaar and iHeart parted ways last month with Kennedy, also WOC's program director, replacing him.

Kennedy said relying on taped segments removed any sort of interaction that could take place with listeners.

"I think everybody realized it was tough because of the way it was broadcast, here and Cedar Rapids," he said. "The interaction with callers and being able to talk about local things, as opposed to local and Cedar Rapids, made it very difficult."

"AMQC" won't be as reliant on interviews with Fox News correspondents as when it was a WOC-WMT effort, he said.

"We're really not trying to be all politics all the time, and all national stories," he added. "We want to cover the Quad-Cities."
