NFL 'Broadcast Boot Camp' Underway

The NFL’s annual “broadcast boot camp” is midway through the process, with 19 current and former NFL players that were scheduled to attend the event this week at NFL Films in Mt. Laurel, N.J.

According to scout.com, the four-day media boot camp covers a variety of topics, with instruction from broadcasters with CBS, NBC, FOX, ESPN, NFL Network, Big Ten Network, Sirius XM and Westwood One Radio. Familiar names like Kenny Albert, James Brown, Ron Jaworski and Curt Menefee make up the nearly three dozen people from the broadcast industry that will lend their expertise to their classroom of NFL players that are students for the week.

There is also an “advanced broadcast” program for boot camp graduates over the last nine years that includes one-on-one coaching and feedback from faculty members, as well as a voiceover audition with EA Sports. Players will develop their skills in play-by-play analysis, radio broadcasting, field reporting and other techniques.

“Over the last decade, this program has resulted in numerous career opportunities for our players in the competitive broadcasting field,” said Charles Way, NFL Vice President of Player Engagement, which is a co-director of the program. “The boot camp not only provides players with the skills but also the confidence to succeed in the media industry.”

Of the more than 200 players who have taken part in NFL Broadcast Boot Camp, more than one-third have earned broadcasting jobs as a result of their participation in the program, according to the NFL. Participants are selected through an application process based on NFL playing experience, essays and demonstrated interest in media.
