San Diego Radio: Tony Gwynn Jr. To Join MLB Padres Broadcasts

Tony Gwynn Jr.
A familiar voice should accompany games at Petco Park this season. Tony Gwynn Jr., a beloved former outfielder, is expected to join the Padres’ broadcast team, the Union-Tribune has learned.

Gwynn’s hiring could be made official next week. He likely would appear on 30 telecasts for Fox Sports San Diego, as well as 30 radio broadcasts on KBZT 94.9 FM. The specifics of his role remain to be seen.

It has long been thought that Gwynn would be a natural fit in a Padres broadcast booth. His eight-year playing career included two seasons roaming the outfield at Petco Park. From his father, Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, he inherited a distinct voice and an outgoing personality. Following his own retirement, the elder Gwynn served as a color analyst for Padres telecasts on 4SD and, later, FSSD.

Last baseball season, Gwynn Jr. was part of the broadcast team for the Dodger Talk postgame show on AM 570 LA Sports Radio.
