👉Sports fans in the US spend more than two hours longer with audio content every day, according to a preview of the Sports Audio Report from Edison Research, SiriusXM Media and GroupM.


👉Ariel Shapiro’s final Hot Pod was published. In an editorial, she paints a picture of a new industry landscape - where investments have dried up and every project needs to be profitable to survive; and suggests she “got to the party too late”.


👉Triton Digital’s March podcast ranker is out for the US.


👉Podcast hosting company Captivate has rolled-out support for chapters, including image and URL support, in its embedded player.


👉An impending UK election probably means podcast advertising revenue will be adversely affected, according to Adelicious CEO, Andrew Goldsmith. The UK government was one of the first advertisers on podcasts in the country, but rules around election spending are complex.

👉A brand new microphone, the Lewitt Audio Ray, has been launched… with a laser. The microphone has what it calls “autofocus” for sound, tuning the voice depending on how close, or far away, the person is from the microphone. It’s a new and novel idea; our review says it could be an excellent guest microphone, or for use on camera.


👉Rephonic has started rolling out details of Spotify follower numbers for every podcast in its directory. The data appeared in some users’ apps a few weeks ago.


👉Seems that the HotPod “hiatus” will be longer than first thought: all subscribers to the newsletter have had their paid subscriptions refunded. (If that refund is burning a hole in your pocket and you’d like to support us…)


👉How many podcasts make it to 5 or more episodes? Only half of them, says data from the Podcast Index.


👉Libsyn Ads has announced a partnership to represent the Toronto Star’s podcasts for ad sales.

👉Parcast founder Max Cutler has announced the launch of a new media company, Pave Studios. “Positioned across video, audio, books and entertainment”, the release appears careful not to use the word “podcast” (though the video does).Spotify bought Parcast in 2019 for more than $100mn; Cutler left Spotify in Feb 2023, the Parcast brand was combined into Spotify Studios last year.


👉UK media regulator Ofcom has released data on audio listening in the UK. The raw data is also available in full, and Adam Bowie has looked more closely into the data. He discovers that podcast listening is not growing overall in the country; but there has been a marked growth in younger listeners. Spotify, BBC Sounds and YouTube appear high in the list for podcast apps.


👉In the US, the IAB has released the IAB Internet Advertising Revenue Report. Total internet ad revenue grew 7.3% in 2023. Internet audio, including podcasts, grew 18.9% to $7.2bn. We’ll learn the podcast revenue numbers on May 9.

👉The Podcast Standards Project has announced that more than 2.5mn podcast episodes now feature creator-supplied transcripts using the open <podcast:transcript> standard. Those Podcasting 2.0 transcripts are visible in apps like Apple Podcasts, Podcast Addict, Fountain and Podcast Guru as well as many others.Doing your own transcripts in the RSS feed means you can add speaker names to your transcripts and correct mis-spellings.


👉Inspired by Ashley Carman’s recent article in Bloomberg, The Podglomerate has produced a list of almost the top 1,000 shows from Spotify. The company says it’s great for research, pitching and general navel-gazing.


👉Spotify for Podcasters has added team management to its list of features, allowing you to invite other members of your team to manage your podcast.


👉Expect some internet ad revenue numbers from the IAB later today.


👉Android Police share five things we will miss about Google Podcasts now that it’s dead. (The app is alive and well in every country outside the US until June 24).

👉Podcast monetisation company Audioboom released its Q1/24 financial results. The figures show an 11% year-on-year growth in revenue, continued EBITDA profit, and eCPM (revenue per thousand listens) of a record $52.17.Things have changed - five years ago, the company’s eCPM was $23.77.


👉Production tool Alitu now includes “magic filters” to automatically remove ums, ahs, filler words and long silences. The company says its the result of customer feedback.


👉Equipment manufacturer RØDE has launched a number of new products at NAB 2024, which is taking place in Las Vegas currently. The Interview Pro microphone is a handheld wireless microphone with on-board recording; the company also announced an iPhone filming mount and magnetic microphone holder for iPhone.


👉Jordan Harbinger has jumped (back) into LinkedIn, and has been posting gems like how he advertises his podcast, the benefit of preparation, and much more.


👉Radio and podcast company Audacy has partnered with synthetic voice company ElevenLabs to “augment its existing programming and production workflows”.
